Keir Starmer: UK needs to ‘wean itself off’ China MONTREAL — The man hoping to be Britain’s next prime minister said the U.K. needs to “wean itself off” China “when it comes to trade, commerce and technology.”Speaking to Anne McElvoy, the host of POLITICO’s new Power Play podcast, Labour leader Keir Starmer said: “We need to be absolutely clear about the security of the U.K. and issues like spying and interference which goes on and of course the human rights abuses that are taking place.” “How do we wean ourselves off Chinese influence across the world?” Starmer asked. “There are big questions that progressive governments could face together.” However, he acknowledged that it was impossible to “distance ourselves” completely from China on big-ticket issues like climate change.Attending a conference of like-minded leaders on the center-left in Montreal, Starmer warned that progressive leaders need to be “acutely alert” to the possibility of Donald Trump returning to the White House and taking a more conciliat...

It’s the Biden show as other top leaders skip UN confab President Joe Biden will dominate the stage more than usual during next week’s U.N. General Assembly gathering — several other heavyweights aren’t even showing up.The leaders of four of the five countries that hold permanent seats on the U.N. Security Council are expected to skip the annual event, which draws heads of state and government from all over the world.Their absence may have a welcome side effect for Biden: It could boost his administration’s struggling effort to improve America’s image with less-powerful countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia that view the United Nations as a vital forum. It also could help woo those nations away from China and Russia. The heads of two top American rivals — China and Russia — aren’t expected to attend. The leaders of two major American allies — the United Kingdom and France — also aren’t bothering to show. All have different or unknown reasons for not trekking to New York. For many less-wealthy countries, the U.N. forum is a rare oppor...

General Assembly this week.Worries about Russian-North Korean ties have flared since North Korean leader Kim Jong Un traveled to Russia last week for a summit with President Vladimir Putin and to tour a slew of high-profile military and technology sites. Security Council resolutions and various other international sanctions,” South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol said in written responses to questions from The Associated Pre...

Zimbabwe’s reelected president says there’s democracy. But beating and torture allegations emerge HARARE, Zimbabwe (AP) — Barely a week after being elected as a local councilor for Zimbabwe’s main opposition party, Womberaiishe Nhende and a relative were pulled out of their car by unidentified men, shot with a stun gun and handcuffed. They were then bundled into a pickup truck and driven about 70 kilometers (more than 40 miles) outside of Harare, the capital, where they were whipped, beaten with truncheons and interrogated, and injected with an unknown substance, their lawyers say.Having been questioned over what their Citizens Coalition for Change party is planning after August’s disputed and troubled national election, the ordeal ended when the two men were dumped naked near a river, the lawyers allege.Their story isn’t new in the southern African nation, which has a long history of violence and intimidation against opposition to the ZANU-PF party during its 43-year rule. For a divided Libya, disastrous floods have become a rallying cry for unity TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) — Zahra el-Gerbi wasn’t expecting much of a response to her online fundraiser, but she felt she had to do something after four of her relatives died in the flooding that decimated the eastern Libyan city of Derna. She put out a call for donations for those displaced by the deluge. In the first half-hour after she shared it on Facebook, the Benghazi-based clinical nutritionist said friends and strangers were already promising financial and material support. “It’s for basic needs like clothes, foods and accommodation,” el-Gerbi said. For many Libyans, the collective grief over the more than 11,000 dead has morphed into a rallying cry for national unity in a country blighted by 12 years of conflict and division. In turn, the tragedy has ramped up pressure on the country’s leading politicians, viewed by some as the architects of the catastrophe. The oil-rich country has been divided between rival administrations since 2014, with an internationally recognize...

CU Buffs vs. CSU Rams quick hits: Colorado survives Henry Blackurn, Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi and an overtime thriller for the ages Initial observations from the CU Buffs’ 43-35 double-overtime win over the CSU Rams in the first Rocky Mountain Showdown between Deion Sanders and Jay Norvell at Folsom Field on Saturday night. This was personal… for everyone: Let’s see… 11 penalties, multiple personal fouls, four unsportsmanlike flags and enough after-the-whistle scuffles and trash talk to fill a Stanley Cup playoff run (not to mention a pregame dust-up). And that was just the first quarter! In the days after CSU coach Jay Norvell caused a stir with his sunglasses-and-hat comment, Coach Prime and the CU Buffs couldn’t stop declaring how this game had become personal. Clearly, they were not alone. The Rams have spent months in CU’s shadow as Deion Sanders and the Buffs sucked up all the oxygen in the Centennial State — and pretty much everywhere else. Given a chance to share the same stage, the Rams made this their Super Bowl. And it showed.Oh, Henry?!?!: Will Henry Blackburn...
