A 27-year-old Irvine man who drunkenly crashed his convertible Corvette while driving at least 138 mph on a surface street, killing his two passengers, was sentenced Friday to 30 years to life in prison. An Orange County Superior Court jury more than a year and a half ago convicted Norman David Martin of two counts of second-degree murder for the July 27 crash at Jamboree Road in Irvine that claimed the lives of Jamie Lopez and Nancy Ortiz, both 26.During a night out drinking with friends, Martin met Lopez and Ortiz outside a club in Costa Mesa. An Uber arrived to pick up Martin’s group, but when the driver determined there were too many people to fit into one car, Martin told his friends that he and the two women would meet them later at an Irvine apartment.A short time later, Martin called a friend to tell him that he had picked up his car and was on his way, with the friend responding “I hope you aren’t driving.”Martin was indeed driving the two-seat convertible, according to test...

A few ideas for Vice President Kamala Harris’ Sunnyvale visit

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 12:57:07 GMT

We’ve all had our share of whirlwind trips, and Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Sunnyvale on Monday will probably be a hurried affair as well. But on the off chance there’s a little free time in her itinerary, here are a few spots the vice president should consider visiting before jetting back to D.C.First, if you want to understand how far Sunnyvale has come after visiting Applied Materials’ advanced labs, take a trip to the Sunnyvale Heritage Orchard and Museum on Remington Avenue. The apricots aren’t quite ready for picking, but the orchard of 800 Blenheim apricot trees spread out over 10 acres is a visual reminder of the days when the Santa Clara Valley was the fruit-production capital of the world. You might even run into Charlie Olson, who continued to work the orchard well into his 80s.The Orchard Heritage Park in Sunnyvale contains about 800 apricot trees, with fruit is picked and sold at a farm stand at the adjacent Sunnyvale Community Center. In Cannes, standing ovations stretch on and on — but they’re designed to

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 12:57:07 GMT

CANNES, France (AP) — The Cannes Film Festival is on, which means stopwatches are out.Nowhere are the length of standing ovations at high-wattage premieres more carefully recorded and parsed than in Cannes. Did a movie garner a triumphant eight-minute standing ovation? Or did the audience stand for a mere four or five minutes? How has such an unlikely metric come to reverberate around the world within minutes of a premiere? And why is everyone standing for so long? Doesn’t anyone’s hands get tired?Such effusive displays of enthusiasm have come to be a hallmark of Cannes and, sometimes, a bit of marketing gimmick for films looking to resonate far from the Croisette. If Cannes, the world’s largest and glitziest film festival, stands for cinematic excess, its thunderous standing ovations can seem like its greatest overindulgence. No one needs a bathroom break?Less widely understood, though, is how the pageantry of Cannes shapes and distorts standing ovations. When audi...
