Hostess Brands President and CEO Andy Callahan knows that his company __ the maker of Twinkies, HoHos and other snack cakes __ is sometimes the butt of jokes.“A lot of people think a Twinkie has a shelf life of a thousand years,” Callahan said. “It doesn’t. Once it gets to the store, it typically has to be sold within 35 days.”Callahan says a steady stream of new products, like candy bar-inspired Kazbars and miniature Baby Bundt cakes, have been key to winning over skeptics and leading them back to old favorites. “When the consumer is reintroduced to a Twinkie, they’re always delighted because of our investment in our product quality,” Callahan said.Hostess, which was founded in 1925, almost didn’t make it into the new millennium. The company filed for bankruptcy twice before private equity investors formed Hostess Brands in 2013. Callahan discussed the challenge of leading a brand with a history, as well as his service in the U.S. Navy, with The Associated Press. On the Greek table, vegetable dishes called ladera are not intended as mere sides. Instead, these filling meals put vegetables center stage, often involving lavish amounts of legumes braised in olive oil and tomato — plus plenty of crusty bread to sop up the juices. For that, you can thank the Orthodox Christian faith, which calls for meat- and dairy-free diets 40 days before both Easter and Christmas, as well as two weeks in August, plus every Wednesday and Friday the rest of the year. But the tradition has permeated the broader culture, with dishes such as gigantes plaki enjoyed in taverns and homes alike. This much-loved Greek dish, which is essentially a slightly more elaborate version of baked beans, braises enormous gigante white beans in a savory tomato sauce with copious extra-virgin olive oil for richness. The sauce typically is assembled on the stovetop, and once the dried gigantes are soaked and added to the sauce, the dish bubbles to completion in the oven.In this version ...5 killed in shooting at Louisville bank building: police

French lawmakers will visit Taiwan, the island’s foreign minister said on Monday, as China ramps up military exercises around the self-governing island. Joseph Wu said that France’s Senate and National Assembly had shown support for Taiwan and that French politicians will travel to the capital “very soon,” according to a Bloomberg report, which added the delegation is expected to travel Sunday.Taiwan’s government will “check with them to see what kind of additional support we would need,” Wu added. His comments follow French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to China last week, during which he told POLITICO that Europe should avoid getting dragged into a confrontation between Beijing and the U.S. over Taiwan. China considers the island part of its territory, a claim rejected by Taipei. “The paradox would be that, overcome with panic, we believe we are just America’s followers,” Macron said.“The question Europeans need to answer … is it in our interest to accele...Police say 5 killed in downtown Louisville shooting; shooter is dead; 6 others hospitalized
