HORSESHOE BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Florida and Georgia residents living along Hurricane Idalia’s path of destruction on Thursday picked through piles of rubble where homes once stood, threw tarps over ripped-apart roofs and gingerly navigated through a maze of streets left underwater or clogged with fallen trees and dangerous electric wires. In Valdosta, a city of 55,000 in southern Georgia, resident Desmond Roberson, who took a drive with a friend to check out the damage, said that on one street a tree had fallen on nearly every house. Roads remained blocked by tree trunks and downed powerlines and traffic lights were still blacked out at major intersections. He said the few gas stations that were open had long lines.“It’s a maze. … I had to turn around three times, just because roads were blocked off,” Roberson said.Nearly all of the 600 tarps that officials had set aside to cover damaged roofs had been claimed by Thursday morning, said Meghan Barwick, spokesw...

Patriots WR Demario Douglas aiming to ‘make a statement’ in NFL debut

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:20:32 GMT

FOXBORO — Demario “Pop” Douglas got his nickname from a late family member who passed away when he was young. If all goes well for Douglas next week, the nickname will stick in New England for a different reason. He’ll have “popped” in his NFL debut.“I’m excited for my first regular-season game and to make a statement,” Douglas told the Herald in the locker room Thursday. “I’m blessed to have this opportunity,”The statement, Douglas specified, is to prove he can play at the pro level. To show his sixth-round label doesn’t capture the player he is; a 5-foot-8, 192-pound dynamo who dazzled throughout training camp and, somehow, in just five preseason snaps.“Really, I just want to go out there and play. I just want to have fun,” Douglas said. “I love this game.”Over the past six weeks, Douglas has received daily feedback from veteran teammates who believe he can help the Patriots right a...

Kyle Hendricks is looking like the playoff-savvy veteran of old for the Chicago Cubs — and just in time for a pennant race

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:20:32 GMT

Pennant races are like snowflakes. They all might look alike, but every one is different.Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks has been through six races over the last nine seasons and is involved in his seventh. Five of the six ended with the Cubs making the postseason, and one concluded with a World Series title.“There are a lot of similarities in a lot of ways,” Hendricks said in a recent interview. “Every year is different, just with the dynamics and the (different) guys. But this one in particular has some feel to ‘15. Just that it’s a little unexpected in a way, from the outside.“Definitely not internally. We knew what we had coming in and knew the chance we had. But both years, externally, the expectations were a lot lower than what we thought we had.”The 2015 Cubs were a far superior team than this bunch, led by Jake Arrieta’s untouchable run and the maturation of rookies Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber. That team was only five gam...

Anthony Volpe’s clutch homer not enough as Yankees fall to Tigers on walk-off error

Published Mon, 24 Feb 2025 08:20:32 GMT

The Yankees failed to finish a four-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers, dropping Thursday afternoon’s series finale despite a game-tying, three-run home run by Anthony Volpe in the top of the ninth.A Gleyber Torres throwing error on a double-play attempt in the 10th inning allowed the Tigers to score the walk-off run in a 4-3 victory in Detroit. The Yankees challenged the final play, contending a slide at second interfered with Torres, but the call was upheld. The loss wasted the heroics by Volpe, who clubbed his clutch, opposite-field blast against Tigers closer Alex Lange with the Yankees down to their final out. Volpe made history in the process, becoming the first Yankee to record 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases in his rookie season.A scoreless bottom of the ninth pitched by closer Clay Holmes pushed the game into extra innings, and the Yankees ended an Aaron Judge off day early by sending the slugger up to lead off the 10th. But Judge grounded out, and the Yankees’ au...
